1.) Beginning at birth, infants gums should be cleaned with a soft toothbrush or washcloth, and water at bedtime

2.) Once the teeth have erupted, it is suggested that children’s teeth are brushed two times a day

3.) Children cannot brush or floss their teeth without help until they can cut meat with a fork and knife (approx. age 9) 

    - Children tend to brush the surfaces of the teeth towards their lips and cheeks and miss the back teeth 
     - It is strongly encouraged that the parent also brush and floss the child’s teeth to provide adequate cleaning coverage of all the teeth

4.) Fluoridated toothpaste should not be used until age 2-3 and the child should be able to spit remaining toothpaste to avoid ingestion

5.) If fluoride is not provided in the child’s water supply, supplemental fluoride will be prescribed by the dentist

     - Fluoride provides strengthening of weak areas on teeth
     - Fluoride is important during the development of the child’s baby and adult teeth

6.) Xylitol, a natural sugar, can be found in sugar-free gum and mints

     -It helps to reduce bacteria that causes cavities
